No headphones jack is fine. Matter facts, it does have some benefits.
- USB to headphones adapter has dedicated DAC which has less interference than intergrated one. - More room for other components. - Easier design for waterproofing.
Phone by Bluetooth earpiece and Hi-res music thru usb to portable amp+DAC. I don’t see the need for outdated 3.5mm jack anymore.
Properly designed DAC placement in a phone with proper shielding will have about as much interference as one built into your headse if not less.
With BT you must also consider the interference with its signal and the noise floor of wireless signals around you.
Also, BT is not lossless. The compression will destroy a bit of the audio.
They have waterproof 3.5mm jacks. Stating its easier to waterproof a phone without a 3.5mm jack when it also has other ports like USB, sd, sim, speaker slots is like saying its easier to pick up a 15oz cup than a 16oz cup.
BT gives you wireless, hands free calling which is nice. Also convenient for hooking up to your car.
Having a 3.5mm jack gives you better audio quality. Noticeably & measurably so.
I prefer both. I like hands free calling and BT support for when I ride or drive but I like wired headphones when I'm in the cattle cart flying places or working out.
If you're OK with no 3,5, cool. The jack isn't outdated. It's functional, it works well for what it's supposed to do, and there is no superior replacement for it yet.
No headphone jack is fine for alot of people. It's just a feature that you happen to still use, and most don't anymore. It's going away, get used to it. A few more years and no-one will have it.
What do you do where you'd use more than 480mbps bandwidth on a regular basis? I'm genuinely curious, because I hear this complaint a lot but no one has ever been able to explain why.
Full system backups (not the halfway ones you get “in the cloud”), transferring bigger files (USB is not going away on laptops/PCs) like videos (upload speeds suck), faster charging while connected, etc.
F that thing. No modern flagship phone is complete unless the ENTIRE back is covered in camera lenses. It needs like 50 of them to compete. Just shrink that battery to make room and be sure to keep the thickness below 4mm or it sucks! All of those lenses would give it the Anandtech-approved "premium feel" as well since the back would be made of glass.
Phone camera is a marketing gimmick. Sure it’s convenient sometimes when you need a snap shot but the tiny phone camera lens can no way be compared to a point-n-shoot’s, let alone a DSLR’s, quality wise. Only thing it’s good for is selfie taking.
And the annoying bump. Ughh... They make the phone as thin as possible with the camera bump so you can install a thick case on.
remove the 3.5mm jack and "all" they could put in there was 3700Mah battery and yet others such as Redmi 5 Plus have a 3.5mm jack AND 4000Mah battery....LOL.
granted 3700 is "decent" compared to "some" to use that as a reasoning why they could increase battery to this size is ridiculous especially for the sheer size of these phones, others are around this same level roughly ranging from 2800 to 3800 battery size, then there are others such as OUKITEL K10000 that truly blow the doors off the "we could only fit in X size by removing things BS" wording
if they can fit in a 10,000Mah battery then the "leaders" such as samsung, LG, Motorola and the like can "just as easy" do the same darn thing at least they (the big makers) could support all the "bands" we use in north america unlike many of the "china brands" that do not always support all bands we have need of for the various big 4 providers (telus, bell, rogers, shaw and whatever in the US)
As for PeachNCream saying cover phone in cameras, shrink thickness to below 4mm and reduce battery size or it sucks...douche lol.
already these phone makers are prioritising making as thin as possible, covering in cameras and glass, removing things and not really "helping" battery size...imagine battery size if they made as thick as they used to make them (which vast majority of people were perfectly fine with because they did not "shatter" from a little bump) they probably would all have 6000Mah+ battery size with plenty of room for 3.5 jacks, cameras and the like.
the ONLY reason they do this (IMO) is planned obsolescence and to make sure battery gets hot so people replace phones sooner then need be (wears out much sooner or breaks for no reason because they are not nearly as durable as they once were). welcome to the throw away "modern" world we live in.
I will not accept fewer than 50 cameras on a phone and it MUST be less than 4mm thick. I don't care if they have to omit a screen, battery, and SoC to do it. Phones need to compete with one another on a new feature and the number of cameras your phone has will clearly define your social standing among others when you whip it out at Starbucks. I don't want people looking down at me for only having a paltry three or four cameras on the back as I'm no mere peasant!
What are the odds that OP ever makes another small(er) phone? I love what they've been doing for years but one-handed use is a big priority for me... Seems like there's all these great midrange and high value quasi-flagships at 6"+, but not so much at <5.5" (let alone closer to 5"). I'd love to throw my money at them if they made something smaller!
I don't even care about the headphone jack tbh, I'd rather have it than not, but it isn't a deal breaker since I use BT most of the time on the go (and some dongles sound better w/my IEM than many of the built in jacks with higher output impedance). When my OG Pixel started acting up, I ended up with a Pixel 3 despite the price hike... Only other small-ish phone that really tempted me was the ZX2 Compact.
There's gotta be more of a market for smaller Android phones with high end specs...
One handed use most likely means you're using the phone when you should be driving instead of killing others: Chinese women have even smaller hands and no issues using bigger phones, so you're just holding it wrong.
I am also a sucker for 18:9 ratio 5.5" phones without any bezel. And no driving isn't the only scenario where you use the phone single handed-ly, I use it while eating. So if Oneplus creates such phone, I would be all in. Or if Sony prices their Compact series competitively.
Only the tragic loss of my OP5 could make me consider this one: It's quite simply fast enough, and lasts long enough on 3000mAh.
Only a decent docking station with support for wired Ethernet and lagless 1920x1080 or better external monitor support and SATA SSD compatible storage bandwidth could otherwise bring about decisive change of mind.
Alas those features have been boykotted since the dawn of the very personal computer aka smartphone.
Here to an industry that evidently wants to die with design and bragging rights over utility: Make do without my €€€!
"Personally I just can’t comprehend why companies are doing this as it’s a very big degradation of device experience with absolutely no benefits"
It's really simple - Look at the link below and see how the marketshare for Apple panned out and that's for 2016 and the 2017-2018 you can extrapolate or find it.
Staggering 49Cents/Dollar or every wireless headset.
So Apple created a problem with an expensive solution and the fuel to that is the ecosystem lockdown, people wanted a solution and they paid for it instead of voting with wallet (that never happens in Apple utopia). All the companies followed and creating their own ecosystems - Google is no 1 of the shameless bunch that blatantly blamed Apple and copied them next year, Made For Google with the same Dongle shop they are setting at google store, the latest twist was the wireless charging drama with proprietary certification MFG, just like MFi. It's just a disgrace to Android community.
Razer - Hammerhead, USB C priced very high, for that price I could get a very decent standard headset with more wear and tear lifetime.
Essential - $99 fancy looking USB C again with issues. Android Police has a review of them
Sony, their LDAC ads on the phone pages pointing to their wireless headset at 300+ USD, shame that they are HiFi game, but even there they are ripping off, the MDR EX1000 was put to rest on the incompetence of the XBA Z5 and A series and now the super unobtanium IER Z1R
Motorola - No idea what they are thinking but they have their Mods ecosystem which has battery+jack (Gimped battery in the phone)
HTC - Shot themselves in the balls, they were audio kinds until HTC 10 with undisclosed DAC which is praised a lot at HeadFi and other forums, their dongle is out of stock as well LOL.
One Plus - Bullets trash headset (Boomy very muddy) which is bloated and not working wiht other phones, thanks to Android Police for this info.
With all these solutions to the problem that they created are nowhere near to the Apple level of profit margins with Beats+ Airpods combined. These all OEMs are peasants looking and robbing people at pathetic levels of % margins, Google is shameless to the point of ridiculousness thanks to Notch.
Meanwhile Samsung has a Stylus pen with IP68 (Latest 1 grand iPhone got the rating at last) works underwater, has the fast wireless charging, SD Slot, best in class display, solid camera, top built, with stereo speakers and a headphone jack, Oh a battery bigger than this and camera which trashes this phone as well.
It's a shame that every company is looking to become Apple and shaft the consumers by ditching the standards, this phone is absolute joke. The Oppo R17 has a headphone jack + SD Slot with the same design since OP rehashes or recycles the same.
tl;dr to anybody that doesnt want to read this long, rambling comment:
Apple took out the headphone jack to make more money and sell more bluetooth. SHOCKER
Many Android OEMs followed suit thinking they could do the same. They cant. Shocker.
People choosing to continue buying iPhones and Airpods/beats means they are being robbed, I guess Tim Cook put a gun to their head and said they must be happy with the decision. Newsflash: most people (myself included) dont care
Umm if only that had any truth. Andriod OEM's don't care about bluetooth, they make zero dollars unlike apple who sells them with phones.
There is millions of awesome bluetooth headphones. People complain about no headphone jack just like to complain. Its like people complaining about a notch on a phone, no one really cares.
No jack also means no FM radio. For many, no great loss, except in emergencies; but it's a feature.
But the key issue is that it's another thing to buy and charge (and lose battery capacity over time). Not only do you have to buy new headphones, you'll probably have to buy *another* set in a few years' time when the battery dies.
What's good for companies is often not good for you. Of course ultimately the market will decide. Maybe mid-to-low-end phones keep it, which is just fine by me as those are the ones I buy anyway.
People who complain about the lack of a headphone jack also complain because they want the better audio quality, don't want to have to buy new overpriced headphones, nor charge said headphones.
To add to the other criticisms of bluetooth (as the main audio connection); I have headphones that I have had for years. No batteries to wear out. I likely won't have to nor want to replace them for many years to come.
It's not as simple as 'use bluetooth'. I have a car with an AUX port but no bluetooth that I have no intention or need to sell for several years. A USB to 3.5mm would work, but then lose the functionality of charging via the port.
